They know they won't face any resistance.
Even one person with a gun firing errant shots makes them duck, hide, and stop the manslaughter.
It's not a freaking hollywood movie where they stand in the open, calmly firing shots while someone shoots at them.
and people should be trained to fight back, not act like sheep to the slaughter. Throw chairs, books, anything handy, instead of just waiting to be slaughtered like a cow.
