I remember being kicked out of a game in Columbia. I thought I was going to get arrested because I didn’t want to leave the floor. It took me about 15 minutes to get from my bench to the locker room. Every time I would take a step, I’d stop and the fans would boo me. I’d look around and take another stop and stop and the fans would boo me. I always thought that Missouri had some of the best college basketball fans in the country. Norm had built such a following. He was like a legend there. The atmosphere there with the, I think the group is called The Antlers. They were a boisterous and enthusiastic and created a lot of excitement when you came up there. I have a lot of fond memories of Norm and the atmosphere in Columbia and how passionate their fans were and how they supported their program. I have a lot of respect for how they’ve been able over the years to embrace the basketball program and make them feel special. It’s a very unique thing they have with their program. It wasn’t always fun to go in there and coach against them, but I have a healthy respect for them and what they’ve done.
(On Feb. 21, 1988, Hamilton only got to see part of Oklahoma State’s 92-70 loss to Mizzou at the Hearnes Center. He was ejected in the second half after OSU received three bench technicasl, two on Hamilton and a third on assistant coach Bill Self. Yes, that Bill Self. Things got uglier after the game when Hamilton accused referee Jim Bain of accepting game tickets from Stewart. Then Stewart went on a tirade against the media during his postgame press conference. Fun times all around!)
