Gant said he first tried to transfer to Georgia Southern, but the university would not admit him because of his grades. .... “I was going to come to Georgia Southern at first, but my grades didn’t transfer over or something,” Gant said.

For Gant, it’s been a rocky journey back to where it all started when he was a four-star recruit committed to Missouri and named Mr. Basketball in Georgia.
But things didn’t go as planned from the first day he arrived at Missouri’s campus in Columbia, Missouri, 900 miles from his family’s home in Springfield. As a freshman, Gant was suspended indefinitely by Missouri after he was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault along with teammate Russell Woods. He was eventually cleared to play and rejoin the team, but 18 months later, his name came up again when he and woods were arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. The Columbia Police Department executed a search warrant for Gant’s apartment in connection for a home invasion robbery that had happened a few weeks earlier. Police said Gant wasn’t a target in the investigation, but they found two marijuana smoking devices in his room. Both Grant and Woods turned themselves in, and police arrested Gant’s roommate, Koran Ward as a suspect in the home invasion.
Six months later, in August of 2016, Gant found himself in the middle of an NCAA investigation into Missouri’s basketball program that led to the Tigers self-imposing a one-year postseason ban and the vacation of all 23 wins during the 2013-2014 season.
According to the Kansas City Star, the investigation alleged a Missouri booster provided Gant and several other recruits $1,000 for a no-show internship and “provided housing, cash, transportation, iPads, meals and free gym access.”
During his time at Missouri, Gant averaged 4.9 points per game his freshman year and 5.1 points his sophomore year. He sought to transfer from Missouri to be closer to his mother, La’Kenia, after she suffered a serious concussion when, according to Gant, a digital projector fell on her head.
Even though he still has to fly to make it back to the Coastal Georgia area, Gant said he doesn’t worry too much about his mother. She’s doing better and has the support she needs from the rest of Gant’s family. But it was difficult for a time, Gant said. The concussion was so bad, she couldn’t go out of the house. But she was there to watch her son on Saturday.
“She’s doing really good,” JaKeenan Gant said. “Way better than she was doing. Sometimes she’ll have headaches. She had headaches for two weeks straight, like migraines. She couldn’t move because her head was bothering her and the medicine didn’t work, but it’s coming down now and I think she’s good.”
