same as putting ourselves on probation and vacating a season's worth of victories.

It was a failed attempt to distract from the disaster of the current coaching staff and buy them some time to turn things around, which didn't materialize because they were incompetent and no amount of time could have been helpful. MU stopped counting actual attendance when the figures started to dip into embarrassingly putrid levels.
