Had he set his mind to trying to set an NCAA record for assists every game, not only would he have, but his (and each of his team's) play would have been even better.
IMHO he should have been coached that he was only to ever look for his own shot if he got to the rim; be it penetration on his own, pick and roll set play, or transition...or a spot up three IF AND ONLY IF the ball were reversed to him or kicked out from the post.
Whoever told him he needed to develop into a scorer to make the NBA did him a disservice.
