they spent the money designing & building it... and they were right.

Had they been wrong and no one purchased them they would have very quickly stopped producing them.

The same is true of child pornography. If there was no demand for it, they would stop producing it. If the demand grows, the production will surely follow, as there is money to be made doing so.
