A quick scan of the post seems to indicate that Hokie's was defending an assertion that patriotism was not "worship" of the state. In defense of his assertion he noted that the definition of patriotism did not make any mention of "worship":

Definition of patriotism
: love for or devotion to one's country

In response, Swamp Tiger looked up the definition of devotion, one of the words used in hokie's definition & highlighted the words "worship" and "loyal":

Definition of devotion
1 a : religious fervor : piety
b : an act of prayer or private
worship —usually used in plural during his morning devotions
c : a religious exercise or practice other than the regular corporate (see corporate 2) worship of a congregation
2 a : the act of dedicating something to a cause, enterprise, or activity : the act of devoting the devotion of a great deal of time and energy
b : the fact or state of being ardently dedicated and loyal her devotion to the cause filial devotion

I didn't see the full thread or the discussion that presumably led up to hokie's OP in the thread, but it's very likely that hokie was trying to refute pickle's (& others') assertion that patriotism = state worship.
It looks to me that Swamp Tiger's definition of a word (with multiple meanings) used in hokie's definition does not prove that patriotism = worship of the state. It would have carried a lot more weight if the only meaning of 'devotion' was some form of 'worship', but that is not the case. Alternatively, Swamp Tiger could make a reasonable case if he could show that 'devotion' was clearly used with a meaning of 'worship', but my own reading of hokie's definition certainly gave the opposite impression, that it was clearly intended to mean definition 2 a from Swamp Tiger's list:
2 a : the act of dedicating something to a cause, enterprise, or activity : the act of devoting the devotion of a great deal of time and energy
In summation, the vast majority of people who say that they are patriotic absolutely reject the idea that they are 'worshiping' the state, and there has been no evidence presented in Swamp Tiger's post that they are all lying or misunderstanding what they are doing. All that has been presented is that a definition of a word from a definition of patriotism has multiple potential meanings, one of which could be consistent with everyone disagreeing with him is either lying or deluded, but another common meaning that is consistent with them not lying nor being deluded.
