The Google incident was internal. James Damore wrote an internal memo suggesting that a company policy was counterproductive and made no sense in the face of scientific studies. He didn't make a public issue of it until after they fired him for having a politically incorrect opinion.
The NFL players' demonstrations were entirely public from the start and in the least exploited a patriotic ceremony which has the appearance of contempt for the flag and country over a personal grievance.
The players put the league in a disfavorable light over an issue that didn't involve the NFL. Damore privately made a suggestion to his employer.
