...save the bone from a pork shoulder or the bone from a spiral ham (if you aren't double smoking those, you should be). Either bone can be put in a crock pot with some chicken broth and water. (If you don't smoke, you still need a bone; smoked bones are just awesome.) I add some spices, like dried ancho chile flakes, herb de Provence, cardamom, a bay leaf, and a some salt. It is just about what flavors you like. There is no need to be heavy handed, because you have plenty of time to add more to taste as the cooking proceeds. You can add more, but you can't take it out; and things will concentrate a bit as they cook.

I usually go one of two directions from here. You can wash and add 1 to 2 cups of raw beans. There are some good mixes out there. I think my wife buys one from Costco. Add a tablespoon or so of white vinegar. Cook until the beans are tender. It takes most of the day. Season during the last hour or so to get the broth tasting good.

If I don't want beans, I usually add some potatoes. If I plan to add macaroni, I don't add too many. (If you like macaroni in the soup, cook it al dente separately and add it in the bowl, so that it isn't mush.) Spinach is good in soup. I like cabbage. I like squash. It really depends upon what you like. Sometimes, I add tomatoes to the broth, sometimes I don't. If the broth needs more meat flavor, I add some Italian sausage an hour or so before being ready to eat.

As Swamp Tiger said below, you don't really need a recipe. I thought I would give you a little more direction, but after you make soup a few times and a few different ways, you just start to feel it, based upon your taste.
