know that he has no authority to interpret the bible on his own (2 Pet 1:20)... and that The Church is the pillar and bulwark of truth (1 Tim 3:15)
He would also know that the Bible can be difficult to understand "There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures (1 John 1:12)

and that we are to look to the Church for guidance in the interpretation of Scripture (Acts 8:30-31)
When the 1st disputes arose in the early Church about whether the Gentiles needed to be circumcised and to follow Jewish laws, how did they handle it? Did everyone whip out their King James bible, all interpret it as they saw fit and then all go their own ways founding their own denominations so they could make up their own rules and interpretations? Of course not. As we see in the book of Acts (Ch 15) they went to the Church leaders, and the leaders called their first Ecumenical Council and all of the Apostles, the first bishops got together and discussed things at some length. Then St. Peter, our first Pope, got up and gave his testimony, followed by St. Paul & Barnabas & St. James, the bishop of Jerusalem pronounced the matter closed and the Council adjourned, and the matter was definitively settled once & for all.
That has been the pattern of the Church ever since.
The Apostles have passed on their offices by "the laying on of hands", consecration, forever after all the way down to the present day.
