incompetent. Further, to basically destroy something you care for greatly and unwind the life's work of your mentor can't be a pleasant experience.

Ideally he would have had the integrity to quit when he realized he couldn't do this job, rather than prioritize his financial well being over the good of the program. But regretfully he did not.
