in eulogizing fallen soldiers, and police and firemen who died in the line of duty, as a way of showing respect for their courage: they willingly did a job knowing their life probably will be on the line at some point.
The fear of being killed doing your job keeps a lot of people from pursuing careers in the military or police.
It's like the fireman and cops who ran into the twin towers when everyone else ran out - I've heard similar thoughts expressed about them as a sign of respect, reverence.
