Very simple - Odom thinks he's the best DC on the team. He decided that if he becomes the REAL DC, the team will be better for it. He wants to do all the things a DC does, not just call the plays. He isn't coaching LBs because Cross got fired - Cross got fired because Odom wanted to coach LBs. With Odom taking ALL the DC responsibilities Cross would have simply been in the way and a distraction.

The "philosophical" reason is just a way to explain the firing without criticizing Cross and giving no info to the press - kind of like when a company interviews you for a job and says "it's not a good fit." It avoids controversy.

Odom is saying this team's defense is stronger with me at DC and Heupel does not need any assistance from me on the offensive side.
