It has always been Shea Rush’s dream to play his college basketball for North Carolina coach Roy Williams. So much so that Rush was willing to pay his own way to do it.
Now the 6-foot-5 sophomore forward doesn’t have to.
Rush, who comes from a family of successful basketball players, wrote a first-person account of what it means to him to play at North Carolina and what it now means to do so as a scholarship athlete.
“I already was excited about my sophomore season,” Rush wrote. “But then Coach Williams got us together as a team at the football game against Cal. We always have a team meal before each football game. He gathered us around, and he said some very nice things. He said that he was proud of me, and then he said he was going to put me on scholarship. That made me feel truly honored.”
Rush played in 20 games during his freshman season. He averaged 0.8 points in 1.7 minutes per game.
Rush’s father, JaRon Rush, played basketball at UCLA. His uncle, Kareem Rush, played at Missouri and seven seasons in the NBA. Another uncle, Brandon Rush, won a national championship at Kansas in 2008, won an NBA title with the Golden State Warriors in 2015 and currently plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
