Under Norm involved a "team-building" camping trip during the summer. I have been fortunate enough to be privy to some of the players' testimony during the NCAA hearings. There was apparently a cookout with various food available, including steaks provided by the staff. In order to qualify to eat the staff-provided food, the guys had to pay a fair amount from their food stipend, which was collected by the team manager.
Lee Coward testified that he never paid because he did not intend to eat. He said a lot of the guys were going to eat the food provided by Church and Sandbothe, which they would not have to pay for under NCAA rules. Coward said Church and Sandbothe cooked "some kind of animal with blood all over it," and he only ate Sandbothe's potato chips and some kind of salad. This was obviously deer meat. Coward said "one time we went to practice and Church had some kind of moose or something in the back of his truck with the head cut off."
Lee also said that maybe he might have paid $20 to Jamal Coleman for some food, but Jamal never gave it to the right people. He also said, "Come to think of it, I dont know if Doug (Smith) ever paid. But Doug left. He didn't eat that stuff. The black guys didn't like being out there in the woods."
