Marcus Denmon is going Greek.

Panathinaikos, which is based in Athens and one of the biggest basketball clubs in Europe, announced Wednesday afternoon that it was signing the 27-year old Denmon to a one-year deal with a team option for a second year.

The move provides Denmon his biggest professional stage yet. Panathinaikos is historic power in the EuroLeague, which is the highest level of professional basketball in Europe and, by many measures, the second-most competitive league in the world behind the NBA.

Panathinaikos has played in the EuroLeague every year since 2002 and won it six times, more than any other team in the league’s current format. Its last title came in 2011. Last season, it went 19-11 and made the league quarterfinals for the seventh straight season.

The club is a juggernaut in its native Greece, having won 35 Greek league championships — 23 more than any other team.

Denmon is the fifth American to join the roster along with Chris Singleton, K.C. Rivers, James Gist and Kenny Gabriel.

This is Denmon’s sixth professional stop. He was taken at No. 59 in the 2012 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, but has only ever played professionally in Europe. He played in France with Élan Chalon from 2012-13, in Turkey with Tofas S.K. from 2013-14 and in Italy with New Basket Brindisi from 2014-15. He returned to Turkey in 2015, playing one season with Istanbul BSB and one season with Gaziantep.

Last year with Gaziantep was Denmon’s most prolific professional season. He was eighth in the Turkish League in scoring with 15.9 points per game and added 4.2 assists.
