Why is Trump covering things up if there's nothing to hide

In Rice's case, she was fed some lines immediately after the incident, and she spouted talking points. Unfortunately, it was too early to know exactly what had happened, and her story didn't make much sense in any case. I think she was likely a sacrificial lamb, but she did not tell the true story. The difference between her and Trump is at least Rice's story changed after more information about the attack was known.
Trump continues to deny Russia had anything to do with the election, and continues to deny he or his campaign had anything to do with it, but continues to try and obfuscate and obstruct the investigation almost a year after the fact. If he did nothing, why is he still trying to cover things up?
