their pinnacle during the golden age of radio. TV news started the decline but it was slow and steady. Cable, being more immediate and diverse (Fox News. The rest march to the beat of the same drummer for network news.) became a growing competitor. The internet is what has severely crippled it. They have tried to gain their revenue back by going digital but it hasn't helped. Just more stagnation. Total revenues are nowhere near matching the pre-internet era.
The internet offers a much wider choice of news sources and viewpoints. Newspapers and broadcast more or less march in lockstep. You get the same point of view just about any way you turn there.
