I assume that question is directed at me since I started this tread.
My thoughts are as follows:
1) Russia's national interests obviously are impacted by US policy, since the US at least attempts to control much of what happens in geopolitics. Therefore it is very believable that they attempt to influence US elections. That is hardly unusual, the US meddles in elections in other countries all the time, and when results don't go our way, formets coups.
2) The whole bit about the Russians promulgating fake news is rich. The US has a vast system dedicated to that type of propaganda. Not really illegal and we are in no position to complain.
3) The hacking and leaks of DNC and other materials is probably the work of an intelligence agency but no real way to know. The primary concern would be the Russians did it, but again it isn't like the US hasn't been caught illegally hacking people. For example, we got caught hacking into other country's deliberations on trade agreements, and UN deliberations. We have probably done it with regards to elections in other countries, but that is an assumption.
4) It is clear that neocons have pushed this story to reduce Trump's range of actions when it comes to Russia and foreign policy.
5) Some of Trump's associates are sleezy con men with known Russian associations. It is likely that Russia saw them as possible conduits for influencing Trump. But that probably means Trump was the mark, not a participant in the con.
6) It is possible that Trump is susceptible to blackmail, but far from proven.
In conclusion, I don't see much real evidence that Trump personally colluded with Russia, other than his curious choice of associates.
The theory would be that Russia already believed it could blackmail Trump, and may have made that known to Trump, and he didn't see any alternative to going along, even though he knew he had been compromised. But that is just a hypothesis.
So what to do? I really don't know. Don't want a president that has been compromised by another country but Pence would be a disaster. Don't really want to empower the neocons.
I guess in the end, I am just curious and somewhat amused to see the whole thing unfold.
