Allowing individuals to buy into medicare

I am 60. Back in 2010, some were proposing to allow people over 55 to join medicare if they paid a premium equal to the average cost per participant.
I was rooting for that one. I can afford the cost, what I don't like is dealing with sleezy insurance companies. They have an army of lawyers who work long hours to come up with misleading sales pitches to make you think your plan includes coverages that are not in fact in the plan. Then, after they screw you they use their army of lawyers to out resource you and beat you down when you try to get a fair shake.
A key reform would be getting insurance companies out of the process.
Medicare also has a big enough insured pool to avoid some of the adverse consequences of free loading behavior (Only buying insurance after you get diagnosed with an expensive condition). But I wouldn't oppose a provision that would limit the flexibility for that type of free loading behavior.
