He chose MU at the time over SLU, VCU, Xavier, SIU Edwardsville, and Duquesne. We got a commitment from him as a high school player, which was a significant event at the time because he was a St. Louis Eagles player and it signified that inroads were finally being made with that program (first to commit to MU since Kalen Grimes) and because of the connections to the Tatum family it heightened our chances with Jayson Tatum. Similarly shortly thereafter former St. Louis Eagles product Cameron Beidschied transferred from Notre Dame to MU.
He was only considered a 2 star recruit at the time and was rather unknown in terms of a recruiting profile despite going on to have a very productive senior season. Suggs indicated he was impressed by how hard assistant coach Dave Leitao and head coach Frank Haith seemed to want him.
He elected to go to a prep school after high school, not to clean up academic issues but to be more prepared to play at this level. In an article about his commitment his mother specifies that he is an honor student who had already accumulated 20 college credits at that point, but that Ronnie recognized he needed to bulk up physically and he had a desire to refine his other skills as well.
“They want me to be able to come in and be an impact player as soon as I get into a Missouri uniform,” he said. “That’s what I’m trying to do, so that being said I decided to go to a prep school so I can get stronger and be ready to be that impact guy as soon as I get here.”
Another factor in his decision was that at the time we already had offered all of our scholarships and were still actively pursuing Devin Booker as an additional possibility, so going to prep school allowed us to juggle the scholarship situation.
“The plan was to redshirt my freshman year because they want me to get stronger, but I told them I was thinking about going to prep school and they said that’s a great decision. That’s always good for college players so they can get used to being away from home.”
At the conclusion of his season at a prep school, the staff that had recruited him was no longer at MU and he re-opened his recruitment.
