“When I was younger, me and my brother Scott would always talk about Missouri, and I always liked the school. It was kind of like my dream school.”
“It’s a dream come true. I really can’t even explain it. It’s just one of the best things to ever happen.”
“I’ve been a fan of Mizzou ever since they recruited Scott,” Suggs said. “I told Coach (Mike) Anderson (former MU head coach) when I was 10 or 11 that I wanted to be a Missouri Tiger, and here I am.”
“Defensively, Ronnie has great length and size where we can put him in different spots in our matchup zone,” Young said. “As a 6-6 point guard, we have the ability to get into transition quickly with Ronnie and to get our shooters open looks. Ronnie does a great job attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line. He’s playing out of position. You don’t see too many 6-6 point guards.” He’ll probably play the two or three spot in college.”
“Last year, I was more jump-shot oriented. This year, I’m attacking the lane more. We have a dribble-drive offense this year, which allows me to get into the lane. We didn’t do that as much last year, so I was sitting around the three-point area more. I have a little more freedom this year, which has helped me,” Suggs said. “I averaged maybe five rebounds a game last year. We had Jared (Walde) rebounding, which helped a lot. This year, coach wants me to be one of our leading rebounders and I’ve taken that to heart.”
Much has happened for Suggs since he graduated with the Class of 2014 from Washington High School. Initially committed to the University of Missouri, Suggs spent the 2014-15 school year at Vermont Academy.
“It was different,” Ronnie said. “The year of competition was a lot different from Washington High School. I was playing against players who weren’t just the best in the state, but the best in the country. I got a lot more exposure and got a lot more prepared for the college level. There will be a strong bond with the players and people there for the rest of my life.”
At the prep school, he made important decisions to set up his college career.
First, there was a difficult decision to rescind his verbal commitment to the Tigers. That came after Frank Haith left to take the job at the University of Tulsa.
“It was very tough,” Suggs said. “I wasn’t looking forward to decommitting from Missouri. When I saw the coaching change, it left me wondering how I would fit in with Kim Anderson. When I saw Coach Haith wasn’t going to be there, I thought this might not be the right school for me. I talked to my family about it and they realized we probably should take another year to think about it. I could always recommit because they had an offer for me.”
