Martin hired the father of the #1 recruit and a second top-10 recruit, and then (surprise) landed both of those players. That doesn't make him a particularly good recruiter under "more normal" circumstances.
Also the same coach at AL might look like a "great recruiter" but only a "not horrible" recruiter at Mizzou. Just because kids WNAT to go to AL.
Cheating helps a lot in terms of getting some of the top recruits. I guess if you land the guys, that counts. MU doesn't have a big tradition in terms of cheating in an exceptional fashion, insofar as I am aware. A ton of the SEC schools cheat way more -- just by tradition -- again, if you get the players, I reckon that still counts as being a "great recruiter." I believe that is why Tennessee landed those big classes when Butch got there ... and the initial success of Freeze at Mississippi may be largely due to cheating ... we just don't do that ...
All that said, I admit to your point: some guys are better at recruiting than others just due to their interpresonal communication skills (or being better liars or better salesmen) ... I am unaware that any of Mizzou's current coaches are particularly charismatic, nor that they lie exceptionally well, but who knows, really?
