I think there are a few D2 coaches or even lower that could have pulled it off. Just not him. For it to work, he would have had to have retained players until he got a handle on recruiting or given that job to someone that can do it. Once the losses started piling up, it is even tougher to recruit. To me, major college basketball is at least 75% recruiting and 25% coaching and player development. KA is simply not a very dynamic and exciting person and that is needed to recruit and motivate players.
