I doubt the Watergate reporters heard the tapes before they wrote their articles.
Part of the problem is the rush to publish. But equally problematic is the American public just deciding that something is or is not fake news depending upon whether it supports their position.
We don't know if the Comey memo is real or not. I suspect he'll tell us soon. Supposedly, he has a history of writing them to his files - like he did with the Ashcroft bedside situation. If it's not real, then the reporter and the publication have some real egg on their faces.
