Wow, you're pulling one out there. I was just a kid, but I remember talk about that dam and debate in my own family at the time. At the time, we used to vacation at the Lake of the Ozarks, which I thought was great. I used to think it would be great to have that option so close to home. My older, even then liberal sisters opposed it. Of course, I love that river too. I've spent a lot of time on it and in it (upper). Live not far from it today, but thankfully on high ground. It's a real ***** when it floods, that's for sure.
