I am fairly old and was taught that America was discovered by people who crossed the Bering Strait in 12,000 BC.
The books and teachers made it clear that those indigenous peoples were in the Americas before long before Columbus.
They also taught the Vikings discovery of America in 1000 AD. (almost 500 years before Columbus)
They also put the entire Age of Discovery in context: they don't just go "Columbus discovered America!" They clearly taught that he never set foot in North America.
