I can only imagine what it must be like in the clubhouse and what kind of discussions are going on between players and coaches and among themselves.

I keep reminding myself that a perfect storm of graduations, defections, and injuries has left this as the least talented team since EE has been here, the worst hitting team, the worst pitching, and the worst fielding. So why should any of us be surprised at the results?

But like you say, you don't have to have a team of all Americans to play fundamentally good softball, to field well, make good decisions on the bases, etc. and it all seems broke at this point. Has EE lost the team? Who knows.

I'm not on the inside, but I'm pretty certain the players are really pressing at this point and it's making things even worse. Really, can you imagine what is going through the heads of every outfielder now when a fly ball is hit near them?

It sounds harsh, but the bottom line is that perfect storm that happened to this team this year has resulted in us giving a lot of playing minutes to girls that just wouldn't be seeing the field at the best 8 SEC teams in the conference. Maybe that will change and some of them will develop into good SEC players eventually. And maybe not. We are getting one really good performance from this freshman class, Burnside, in a year that we needed at least 3-4 of them to step in and play really well and contribute significantly. The freshman phenom pitcher has contributed nothing; it's so bad that we are all thrilled when she can pitch a few innings and look healthy, regardless of whether she gets anyone out.

The one thing we know is it will get better. It can't get any worse. We have a monster freshman class coming in next year that should be the core of Mizzou returning to national relevance over the course of the next 4 years. But it's probably not realistic to expect that to happen until the 2019 season. We won't be a national power again until we have an elite, deep pitching staff. It's anyone's guess what year that happens in.
