I guess I'm unclear as to what is being fixed.

Effort? Is the player mailing it in?
Focus? Is the player's mind wandering on the field.
Study? Is there some aspect of the game the player needs to sharpen up on.
Performance? Is the player failing to hit, or committing fielding errors.
Insubordination? Is the player ignoring signs or taking matters into their own hands.
The ultimate old school tool is 'riding the pine'.
But from a coaching perspective, I'd also want to know why the player is doing what they are doing.
Do they straight up think what they're doing is better for some reason and why?
Is it just habit and they're struggling to implement some new way of doing something?
New performance is always two things:
1. Understanding what to do.
2. Drilling it until the body does it automatically.
It's always better to use 1 and 2 liberally and get everyone on the same page of their own free will as much as possible.
If I get to choose between a group built up on 1 & 2 that's working together from a common understanding and a group that's been threatened into the 'right behavior' I'll take the first group every time.
Generally the first group will do amazing things no one ever thought of to achieve the objective, while the second operates in terror, always hoping not to do the wrong thing.
The second one sounds like the group you're building...
