I'd bet that most occur: a) in the commission of another crime like robberies gone bad or drug deals and b) crimes of passion where some jilted party decides to kill their spouse, lover, ex-spouse, etc. as a result of the relationship.

The randomness of it today - the internet shooter, this guy....these folks have a screw loose as evidenced by the fact that this guy offs himself right after shooting the two workers. I mean, if it was racial and they were the only two guys in the neighborhood - who was going to tell on him?
