The only point I disagree with is the suggestion that complete disorder may result in fewer civilian deaths than leaving current regime in power. That may indeed be true under a continuation of current policy - but leaving Assad in place, negotiating some sort of agreement, and greatly reducing Western funding for the "rebels" would in my view save many civilian lives compared to the overthrow scenario.
The other point I would make is the removal of Assad is an achievable goal if the regime is allowed to remain in place without Assad. Assad is just a person. He will get to old to remain at some point. He knows he will not live forever. The focus on one individual is unfortunate. The problem is the US will only settle for a pro-US state that opposes Iran. That can not be negotiated resulting in the "libya" solution.
