The board of trustees was desperately trying to rid the faculty of wrong thinking professors.
The people who were trying to oust the wrong thinking professors were called fascists.
A professor was going to be fired for reading something that the trustees did not want him to read. Of course the trustees had never read it themselves, but they knew it was wrong.
Someone said that ideas are bad because if you put ideas in the minds of young people, they may believe them.
The intrepid professor reads the passage and the students realize that he was only suggesting that we listen to the other side, and learn. The professor was hoist upon the shoulders of adoring students and celebrated as a free speech hero.
The movie was made in 1942. The fascists were conservatives trying to get the "reds" off campus.
Times have changed.
The Male Animal, starring henry fonda. Terrible movie, but like most antiques, interesting from an historical perspective.
