The scientific community has been saying for a decade that corn ethanol is one of the worst uses of energy. If you dont care about the data, the message is simply that we cannot make fuel from a food crop. It is inefficient and affects both markets.

So why is it still a thing? The corn lobby, obviously. And because of Iowa's primaries, they can make it a big deal nationally.

That said, research for a clean, renewable, cost effective, carbon-neutral form of energy should 100% be subsidized by the govt. (those subsidies need to be doled out in a smart way; no one solution fixes all of our problems).

But the crux of my problem with your story is that, even slashing the govt subsidies for corn farming, do you not think that these same praries/fields will be claimed by farmers? Of course they will. A farmer will not let land go to waste. Why would he?
