My experience in being a programmer, was that it was mainly male, white, with a heavy indian influence. very few other minorities.
naturally, racist. Um, no. Companies paid women, minorities more , in order to retain them.
My bet is if you look into the black degree choices, you don't see many in the STEM field, where the money is.
a degree in education, sociology, black studies , doesn't compare to the value of an engineering degree.
oh well.
