Joel Berry is a good example of Roy's "coaching up."

Excellent college player. But he came in ranked in the top 30, so it's not like Roy built him up from nothing. And Berry's NBA stock is nonexistent.
Roy takes talented recruits and generally wins with them, but he hasn't turned a whole lot of players into anything better than what they already were.
His track record of producing NBA players has never been great. Same at kansas. He had some great teams and some great individual players, but most didn't do much in the NBA. Outside of Paul Pierce, I don't think Roy coached a single future all-star at kansas, and he only coached nine guys total who played more than brief stints in the NBA (Pierce, Hinrich, Lafrentz, Collison, Gooden, Walters, Ostertag, Vaughn, and Pollard).
Still not too shabby, but not exactly a magician talent developer, either.
Roy, like most coaches, produces NBA players relative to his recruiting, more or less.
