They either died or couldn't hack it and returned to their countries of origin. For the remainder it was survival of the fittest and only the best managed to survive and thrive. It was root hog or die, if you don't work, you don't eat and those that remained were determined to assimilate into the American culture and live the American Dream. Unfortunately, that just isn't the case with illegal aliens of today. Most are poor, uneducated, do not want to learn the language, assimilate and instead suck up all the government freebies they can get.
