people that they are victims of the system, all their problems are external and nothing they do can change that.
Schools are broken in the inner city because the kids and families they serve do not believe education is a legitimate road to a different/better life.
When I taught in KCMO and asked kids what they were going to do at least 75% thought they would be rappers or professional athletes. Almost none saw a future based upon education. Most of the rest were looking to blue collar futures maybe one in twenty were seriously looking to some sort of post secondary education. It was sad to see so many kids with actual potential not believe the system could actually work for them.
