2015 data from the US Energy Information Commission
(
https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/aeo/electricity_generation.cfm)
Lifetime cost (30 year average) of burning conventional coal is $95.1/kwh (no subsidies). Solar, without subsidies, is $125.3/kwh (31.7% more), the most of any form of energy. Conventional Coal is the third MOST expensive form.
Whats funny is that Advanced Cycle Natural Gas is the cheapest at $72.6/kwh and wind is just behind at $73.6/kwh.
Whats even more interesting is that 2016 data has drastic changes. Natural Gas drops to remain the cheapest form of energy at $57.2/kwh, wind at $64.5 and solar dropped remarkably to $84.7.
Solar will remain a leader in personal/home use, but is perhaps not the best option for large-scale energy production. Discounting solar energy would be a very big mistake at this point due to that fact.
