Good crowd I thought. I wasn't able to make any of the more recent coaching intros - Anderson, Haith, Odom, Anderson - so I can't compare. But it looked to me that 3 sections of the lower bowl were decently full -- so something close to 80% of 25% of the lower bowl if that makes sense. I'm guessing the lower bowl sits 10,000 so something close to 2200?
Sunvold, Link, Church, Roundtree (and I think I saw Thames) standing on the handicap terrace above the lower bowl presented an interesting picture especially as their height literally made them a looming presence over the proceedings. Link, Sunvold and Roundtree seemed appropriately enthusiastic but Church standing there with his arms crossed or mildly golf clapping while scowling was not a great look. I know he's just a naturally grumpy guy and the day was bittersweet at best for the old guard, but I do think it would help with the grey hairs to see yesterday's players not just going through the motions but enthusiastically embracing the new coach. Oh well.
It's good and interesting to see Roundtree's presence. I understand he's moved back to Columbia now that his daughter is a freshman playing for the Tigers, but Billy should have contacts all over Missouri and Illinois given his long career with State Farm. I wonder if he's not becoming more involved with the program in outreach to "the community" across the state and in St. Louis?
The AD held a "pick your seat" promotion but there was little more interaction than asking you to sign up for more information, handing you a price sheet and then putting signs on available seats around the arena. Personally I was surprised to see the scarcity in "available" seats. I know, intellectually, that selling season tickets wasn't necessarily our challenge - rather getting people to use them - but still I thought more seats would have been available. And there weren't -- just a handful of scattered seats hear and there that I could see.
It seemed incongruous: what we saw on TV and in person at games, an appeal to come to games and a "pick your seat" promotion and then literally just a handful of seats to pick from? Anyone know the formula for how many seats the AD wants to hold in reserve for single game packages?
Later in the evening I heard an interview with Sterk who said Ticket Revenue last year was down $2.3 million from "just a few years ago" - and that didn't count donations, parking and concessions. I have no reason to doubt that -- that means the attendance woes of the KA era were easily costing the AD $3.5 to $4 million - and conversely Cuonzo Martin's compensation package should be viewed as a no-brainer investment.
