history and understanding why it was even founded - in favor of today's PC babble, from my classmate forum.
As a flower lover, my wife enticed me to attend the Philadelphia Flower Show this past weekend. Great show. While there I had a moment to leaf through the in-room book that all hotels have for guests. An initial article listed the 10 sights to see in Philly with a short paragraph on each one's prominence. I was mildly surprised that City Hall, The Barnes and Museum of Art all made the list ahead of any of the revolutionary war locations, but at last, the Liberty Bell made the list at about #6. The shocking thing was the description on its importance. It went something like the following:
Come see the Liberty Bell with its famous crack. Learn the important role that it played in American history as a symbol of abolition, universal suffrage and civil rights. Unfortunately, with its crack, we can never hear the bell ring. Located at ....
So what did I find surprising? THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION THAT THE LIBERTY BELL PLAYED A ROLE IN AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE. Nothing about liberty from the tyranny of the British monarch or founding a new nation dedicated to liberty. It was all on currently politically correct movements: civil rights and women's rights. Now I was not around for the suffragettes, but I was for the civil rights movement. I remember the role that King's March on Washington, the bridge at Selma, the troops enforcing school desegregation, and for sure King's assassination, but I never remember anything about the silent Liberty Bell as the civil rights symbol. Does anyone? Sure, the abolition of slavery, women's right to vote and the black rights movement of the 60s are all expansions of American liberty, but the Bell became a national symbol because it was rung to declare our Independence.
Sad.
