The purpose of the establishment clause was to prevent a national religion like the Church of England established by Henry the VIII when he banned the catholic church and said all English citizens had to belong to the Church of England headed by him. That is why the Puritans came here. That was the separation Jefferson meant.

It had nothing to do with prayer in schools or nativity scenes at city hall. That is the perversion of it. Since you are a lawyer you should know that but you did go to ku so maybe not.
