It’s a time-honored technique of incompetent and/or socialist governments everywhere: Blame shortages on business owners.
And so it goes in Venezuela. Bakeries have been put on notice: If lines form outside your store, you’ll be fined.
“Venezuela does not produce wheat and relies on imports bought in by the government, which it then sends to mills, where it is ground and then distributed,” reports the BBC by way of background.
The government accuses the bakers of using their flour ration to make higher-margin pastries instead of basic bread. The margins are higher because unlike with basic bread, the government doesn’t control pastry prices.
But hey, it’s nothing new regulations can’t fix: Now “bakers will be forced to use 90% of the flour they are given to bake ordinary bread and only 10% for pastries and other sweetened goods.” And the government will be sending out a bevy of inspectors to ensure compliance. And if lines still form outside your store, woe be unto you...
