my daughter participating in such an assignment. But any school attempting something like it had better be sure that parents were aware of what was happening.
I think it is important to teach our children our history both the good and bad. But it must be taught in a historical context. Too many try to judge our history trough a lens of modern perspective. That does not work.
Did our country make mistakes in their treatment of natives, blacks, Chinese and many other groups? Without a doubt and we have worked very hard to rectify those mistakes. Does that mean that everything they did was evil? Of course not. They were good men that held views we now find abhorrent but were just they way things were in their day.
To do this particular assignment, and then display it in a common area, showed very poor judgement by the teachers and administration. Not because of the assignment but for the apparent lack of communication with the parents involved.
