she's an awful, unlikeable candidate ... and her message was unpalatable to many voters. She tried to avoid the exposure.

Bill was right that she needed to appeal to working white voters, but her actual message and policies were/are antithetical to their support. So what is presented as a lack of outreach was in fact an attempt to avoid having a weakness turn worse.
