Health maintenance is expensive because of insurance companies and lawyers.
If we truly want to fix US health care we would split health maintenance from emergency care. Make maintenance pay as you go. Make health insurance for emergency and catastrophic care.
I had to pay over $300 for ten minute doctor visit this summer so my doctor could tell me I had strained a back muscle. After a week my wife insisted I go. Seriously, what made that visit $300, it was not the care or treatment involved. Pay as you go and tort reform would likely make that a $20-$50 visit.
