MISSOURI NOTEBOOK: Antler gets an invite
The Antlers, at one time an innovative fan group that became adept at getting under the skin of Missouri basketball opponents, apparently has stepped over the line again.
But it didn't faze Baylor coach Scott Drew, who invited one member of the MU booster group into the Bears' locker room prior to the Tigers' 60-53 victory Wednesday over the Bears. Drew dared him to repeat the obscenities that he and his fellow Antlers screamed at the Baylor team at a Columbia restaurant on Tuesday evening.
“We saw him at the game,” Drew said, “and we thought we might as well let him come down and say hello to the guys again.”
There was no apology.
“He repeated the same stuff,” Drew said. “I don't think you can print much.”
On Saturday, MU officials kicked one member of the Antlers out of Mizzou Arena after he repeatedly uttered derogatory comments about the daughter of Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson.
Then, on Tuesday night, the Antlers were shown the door by restaurant personnel at Old Chicago after they launched an obscenity-filled tirade at the Baylor basketball team, which was eating its team meal.
“They showed up and started cussing at us,” said Heath Nielsen, Baylor sports information director.
“The kind of stuff that if I was dining in a restaurant, I wouldn't want my sons to hear. And there were women there. They were completely inappropriate.
“Fortunately, none of the Baylor players reciprocated in any way. The restaurant folks got there and ushered them out.”
Wednesday night, the Antler who was ejected from the OU game, and who MU officials said provided false ID at that incident, snuck back into the Baylor game but was discovered and ejected again.
At one point the Antlers did things that drew chuckles at games, like the time they held up pictures of former Kansas coach Larry Brown and Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi and asked, “Which one's the terrorist?”
Even Brown got a laugh out of that one.
But in recent years the group was denied seating privileges at the Hearnes Center, and several MU athletic department officials indicated the group's attendance at MU games was again being scrutinized.
“We want to reinforce sportsmanship and positive fan behavior,” said athletic director Mike Alden.
