JON SCHEYER
Assistant Coach
Former Duke All-American Jon Scheyer is in his third year as an assistant coach with the program after spending the previous season was a special assistant with the Blue Devils. Following a three-year professional playing career, Scheyer joined the Duke staff on April 29, 2013.
The Northbrook, Ill., native is joined on Mike Krzyzewski’s staff by fellow former Duke captains Jeff Capel (associate head coach) and Nate James (assistant coach).
Scheyer, who sparked the Blue Devils to two ACC championships and the 2010 NCAA championship as a player from 2007-10, has helped Duke compile a 60-15 (.800) in two seasons as an assistant coach. His first season saw Duke finish 35-4 and win the 2015 NCAA championship as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Scheyer was instrumental in the development of point guard Tyus Jones over the course of the 2015-16 season, as Jones directed a Duke offense that ranked third nationally in both field goal percentage and adjusted offensive efficiency, as well as sixth in scoring offense.
Jones was a clutch figure in Duke’s run to its fifth national title in 2015, earning NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Following the season, Jones – along with fellow Duke freshmen Jahlil Okafor and Justise Winslow – was selected in the first round of the 2015 NBA Draft.
In 2013-14, Scheyer’s duties as a special assistant included assisting the coaching staff in developing game strategies, breaking down game film, planning practices and contributing in staff meetings.
Scheyer was one of the most versatile players in Duke history, concluding his playing career as the only player in school history to record at least 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 250 made three-point field goals and 200 steals. He averaged 14.4 points per game while scoring in double figures 114 times (sixth-most in Duke history) and leading the Blue Devils to a 115-29 record, including a 45-19 mark in ACC play.
A two-time team captain, Scheyer scored 2,077-career points to rank 10th on Duke’s all-time scoring list. He also ranks third all-time at Duke in made free throws (608) and free throw percentage (.861), fourth in three-point field goals (297) and sixth in free throw attempts (706). He played in 144 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest streak in Duke history.
As a senior in 2009-10, Scheyer took over point guard duties for the Blue Devils and averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game to guide Duke to a 35-5 and its fourth national championship. He was a consensus second-team All-American, while also receiving first-team All-ACC, ACC All-Tournament, NCAA South Region All-Tournament and NCAA All-Final Four honors.
Scheyer started all 40 contests as a senior, averaging a team-high 36.8 minutes and leading Duke in scoring. His 38 double-figure scoring games on the season are tied for third on the program’s single-season chart.
