1. Pingeton didn't really have a choice, once Frericks was injured Doty was the clear 5th starter; no way was she going to play a true freshman which were the only other choices. As tough as losing Frericks was, there were some silver linings. As you pointed out Mizzou doesn't really have a true point guard, and even with her limitations, Doty has exceeded expectations. Her starting has also allowed Amber Smith and Jordan Chavis to get critical playing time and develop. If Frericks was healthy, Doty comes off the bench first, and who knows how much playing time Smith would have gotten.
2. I've been mildly critical of Doty in the past but she has been a key part of the evolving identity of this team, and the offense does seem to flow better with her in there, and it also allows the other players to be in their more natural positions. Lindsey C. would have been the point guard if Frericks was healthy, and that's not her natural position. Doty has her limitations for sure, but she is a tough gritty player who never backs down. I've been pleasantly surprised at how she has risen to the occasion. Even if she dribbles too much and turns the ball over too much. But then everyone on this team has a pretty miserable assist to turnover margin. She also has the worst free throw percentage among Mizzous top 6 players, by a wide margin.
3. Funny how things work out. I didn't think we had a chance to get back to the NCAA tournament without Frericks. Would we be a better team if she hadn't gotten hurt? Logically, and on paper, the answer would seem to be yes, of course. But maybe not. It would certainly be a completely different team, and a different identity. Doty, Smith, and Chavis have played key roles and they wouldn't have had nearly as much playing time if Frericks was taking up her usual 35-40 minutes. And now, assuming we get her back healthy next year, this team has the potential to be even better with key players all a year older. Although it will be interesting to see how we adjust to losing 3 senior starting guards who held this team together.
