I remember it came to the forefront in the early '70s with political pressure on the American Psychiatric Association to drop the condition from its list of mental illnesses. They gave no medical reason. They finally gave in to get the asses off their backs. Oh, they just wanted to be thought of as an alternate normality. They wanted to be accepted.
