He was matching half dollars with another guy in front of the Cotton Exchange Bank in Kennett, MO when he heard the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Only a few months later he found himself a world away.
What he didn't know at that time was that his best friend from school went down on the Arizona. Two years earlier that friend tried to convince my father to join the Navy with him on the buddy program. My father was only 17 and my grandfather refused to sign for him to go. If he had, my father would have gone down on the Arizona as well. And I wouldn't be here to tell the story.
